Back in Time
From 1293 to 1520 AD, during the Empire of the Majapahit, the rich heritage of Bali started to develop. It was an era ruled at its peak by Hayam Wuruk, who controlled other kingdoms such as the southern Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, Kalimantan, eastern Indonesia, and the Philippines. It was a sophisticated golden time that brought over Hindu-Javanese literature and artistic activities, which today are still the foundation of Balinese arts.
After his death, the golden age of Bali comes to an end. marked by the exodus to Bali of Hindu priests, intellectuals, artists, and members of the royal family. In the mid-19th century, the Dutch colony expanded across the archipelago, which ultimately led to the formation of the Dutch East Indies. However, Bali was only under their rule for a century and in 1958 was then finally established.
